[DEPRECATED] Switching Covenants – Kyrian to Venthyr : Priest Edition

EDIT: Although it pains me how much effort I put into this, both from a WoW and a documentation standpoint, the switching covenant process is different now in Shadowlands 9.1.5. If you want to reminisce in the “good ole days”, feel free to read on and watch the video. 🙂 Some of the below commentary still applies today, but the painfulness of swapping covenants has been lessened tremendously. “Starting in Patch 9.1.5, players can freely swap between Covenants after reaching Renown 80 with any character in their account.” (Swapping Covenant Document)

Back in January 2021, I was a Kyrian Discipline Priest and I had my toolkit learned pretty well, but noticed that the grass seemed greener on the other side when I’d get Mindgames’d by a Venthyr Priest which turned my heals into damage against my friends and kill my friend on accident; or have to purposefully stop healing them and watch them die anyway as they get burst into oblivion.

Let me also preface this and just say, the grass was greener for PVP especially, however it did take some time to learn how to use the Venthyr abilities effectively. It’s much less punishing if I make a mistake in timing since the cooldown is much lower when comparing Kyrian Boon of the Ascended and Venthyr Mindgames. I did appreciate that Boon in some scary Mythic situations could more easily get me out of a jam opposed to Mindgames, but I don’t Mythic that much (personal preference since healing mythics is… ugh).

Anyway, I pulled the trigger around Renown 24 and overall, it wasn’t too bad to switch over with the catch-up mechanisms in the game. I’m also not “hardcore” in WoW so not being able to max my renown didn’t bother me. Also, not sure if I would have been able to max renown if I would have played more after swapping to Venthyr. I found the following activities would give me renown in-between running campaign quests or covenant quests/callings:

  • Mythics
  • Arena
  • Raids (LFR included)
  • Rated Battlegrounds
  • Weekly Quests

You can get more details about catching up on renown from the real nerds at wowhead here: How To Catch Up on Renown in Shadowlands – Guides – Wowhead

Also, I mentioned that this was recorded in January 2021, and I used a method to “transfer” my anima by buying Kyrian covenant items from the quartermasters and then reselling within the hour at the Venthyr Quartermasters and was refunded anima. I hope for the sake of anyone switching that this method to retain anima remains intact so that painful anima grind doesn’t completely brutalize you. There was also a bug that didn’t allow me to transmogrify my Kyrian styled PVP gear, but that has been since fixed.

Good luck if you’re switching and happy hunting. 🙂
